Pumice is a type of volcanic rock.
Pumice is produced when lava with a very high content of water and gases is thrown out of a volcano.
It contains useful properties only when its young and unalterd.

When more gas is present, there is a finer-grained type of pumice called pumicite.
The name pumice comes from the latin word pumex which means foam.
